Alumni of University Hall (Katanga) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) have partnered with the University’s management to construct a 2,100-bed student accommodation facility as part of efforts to expand residential capacity on campus.
The proposed development is expected to help address KNUST’s student accommodation deficit by providing additional residential spaces and adopting a construction method intended to accelerate project delivery.
Representatives of Geospatz Company Limited, the contractor for the project, disclosed details of the development following an engagement with the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Prof. Christian Agyare.
Director and Chief Executive Officer of Geospatz Company Limited, Mr Alexander Amoah, said the project was designed to respond to the shortage of student accommodation on the KNUST campus.
He said the project would use what the company describes as a carbon-free or graphene construction method, incorporating precast technology to support faster and more environmentally efficient construction.
Mr Amoah said although the project has been allocated a maximum construction period of 24 months, the company is targeting completion within about 18 months.
He added that discussions with the Vice-Chancellor also touched on the future composition of the University Hall community, with Prof. Agyare expressing support for the project and noting the University’s interest in partnerships that could help address its accommodation needs.
According to Mr Amoah, the Vice-Chancellor also raised the issue of affirmative action and the possibility of incorporating female Katanga affiliates into the hall community.
The proposed facility could therefore provide additional residential capacity as discussions continue about the future composition of University Hall and greater inclusion within the Katanga community.
Director and Secretary of Geospatz Company Limited, Ms Mariam Efua Impraim, said the company was encouraged by its engagement with the Vice-Chancellor and the support expressed for the development.
She said preparations for the 2,100-bed project were progressing, financing was in place and Geospatz was ready to undertake the development.
A sod-cutting ceremony is expected to take place in November 2026 to formally pave the way for construction, with the contractor targeting completion within 18 months.
The partnership brings together Katanga alumni, KNUST management and Geospatz Company Limited to deliver additional residential capacity in response to the University’s growing accommodation needs.
Upon completion, the project is expected to add 2,100 beds to University Hall and contribute to ongoing efforts to improve student accommodation at KNUST.
